Arturo Mallmann creates atmospheric, deeply layered paintings that explore the relationship between space, perception, memory, and the human presence within an immense and mysterious world.

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1953 and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Mallmann developed his artistic vision largely through independent study and extensive travel throughout Latin America, the United States, Canada, and Europe. He moved to the United States in 1988 and is based in Los Angeles.

Central to Mallmann’s work is an innovative process he developed over many years. He applies numerous layers of translucent acrylic color between coats of clear resin, building the surface outward from the panel. Color exists at different physical depths within the work rather than simply resting on its surface. The result is a remarkable sense of luminosity and three-dimensional space: forms appear to emerge, recede, dissolve, and reappear as the viewer moves in front of the painting.

Mallmann’s landscapes are imagined rather than literal. Horizon lines disappear into mist; color seems suspended in space; and solitary human figures often appear in the distance, nearly overwhelmed by their surroundings. Their diminutive scale is intentional. By placing the figure near the horizon, Mallmann intensifies the sensation of depth while suggesting the vulnerability—and wonder—of being human within something far larger than ourselves.

Underlying the beauty of the paintings is a persistent philosophical inquiry. Mallmann is fascinated by questions of what is real, what we actually perceive, and how much of the world remains beyond our understanding. His recent work continues to investigate a reality that seems perpetually in transition—appearing and disappearing, forming and dissolving before it can ever become completely fixed.

Although his technique is meticulous and labor-intensive, Mallmann’s finished paintings possess an unusual stillness. Light, color, and space seem to exist independently within the layers, creating an experience that changes with distance, viewing angle, and illumination.

Mallmann’s work is held in public and private collections in the United States, Europe, and Latin America.

At the heart of Arturo Mallmann’s work is a search for something just beyond our grasp. His paintings invite the viewer to look through their layers rather than simply at their surfaces—to enter a quiet, expansive world in which the boundaries between landscape, memory, perception, and imagination begin to disappear.
