Frances Cox was raised in an inner-city ethnic Chicago neighborhood where her parents owned the local bakery. Her earliest memories were of drawing on the unlimited supply of brown wrapping paper, usually in sight of a splendidly messy catalpa tree on their front lawn. On Sunday afternoons, the family drove into the country, which was much closer than it is now. Those afternoons gave her a real love of the possibilities of nature and space. Frances redefined landscapes and still lives, which may have been the product of a child’s imagination that only glimpsed nature briefly, but they were a reward for the week’s work done well. Frances graduated from Marquette University and attended the Art Institute of Chicago. Art has always been an integral part of her life.
