Zygund Jankowski (1925 – 2009) was an American painter celebrated for his vibrant, expressive interpretations of landscapes and everyday life. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, he studied at the Swain School of Design before continuing his education at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Art Students League in New York. His foundational academic experiences established a solid base in modernist principles, while fostering the innovative approach that came to characterize his distinctive artistic expression.

Jankowski spent a significant period of his early career in South Bend, Indiana, where he lived, painted, and exhibited extensively. His time in the Midwest broadened his visual vocabulary, with the expanses of farmland, shifting seasons, and the region’s community rhythms offering new subjects and inspiring a period of expressive growth. South Bend was also where he forged key artistic relationships and began to develop the bold palette and dynamic brushwork that became hallmarks of his mature style. His work from these years helped establish his reputation and led to exhibitions throughout the region.

Later returning to the East Coast, Jankowski settled on Cape Ann, Massachusetts, where the coastline, harbors, and fishing villages profoundly influenced his work. A gifted colorist, he created compositions that pulse with energy, paintings that hover between observation and memory, filled with movement, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. His canvases, whether depicting New England docks, rural landscapes, gardens, or the human figure, reflect a joyful immediacy and a modernist sensibility that remained constant throughout his career.
Jankowski exhibited widely and received national recognition. He became a member of the Copley Society of Art in Boston, served as President of the Rockport Art Association, and participated in exhibitions across the United States. His paintings are in numerous private and public collections, and his longstanding commitment to teaching, both formally and through mentorship, shaped and inspired many younger painters.

Until his passing in 2009, Zygmund Jankowski painted with remarkable vitality and curiosity. His artistic legacy endures works that celebrate color, movement, and the emotional truth of place from the Midwest landscapes of South Bend to the luminous shores of Cape Ann.
